Issue
What is the difference between the information on mailbox storage space in the mail logs and the values returned by the CLI Storage Space command?
Solution
The storage space information you get from each of these sources is different.
- Mail logs - Gives the mailbox storage space used by the individual mailbox. If there are 10 emails in the mailbox, each with a value of 10MB, the mailbox information would show a value of 100MB.
- Storage Space command - Returns the total disk space used by the appliance at a given point of time. This includes the space required for saving all user emails, and for internal database and logs. If the space used by the appliance reaches 100%, it can no longer process incoming mail.
Mirapoint avoids redundant disk usage by linking different copies of the same mail. If a 1 MB mail is sent to all users on the mailbox, there is only one copy on the disk with internal links to each of the user mailboxes. The mailbox storage space would report this 1 MB mail for each user mailbox. For 1000 users, this would result in a total of 1000 MB of mailbox usage, while storage space would report 1 MB plus housekeeping space utilization.
