Issue
Are there any precautions associated with NDMP image backup and restore?

NOTE: Before reading this article, Mirapoint highly recommends reading the latest version of the Mirapoint Backup and Restore Guide. |
Yes. There are three areas where an NDMP image restore can have problems or fail completely.
Restoring to a Live Failover System
Running an NDMP image restore to a live failover system can cause problems. To avoid these problems, disable failover while running the restore. This prevents the standby from taking control while the primary head is doing restore post-processing.
Message Storage Capacity Precaution
You must restore backup data to an appliance with equal or greater message storage capacity as the appliance from which the backup was taken, or the restore fails.
Interaction with Message Aging
When you perform an image restore, restored messages that are already aged survive only until the expiration-culling facility runs, typically early the next morning. In other words, the clock does not get reset: restored messages do not last for their full aging period.
Image backup does not provide a means of renewing the aging process for mail messages. If you want to retain image-restored files for more than a day, you have two options:
- The Mirapoint administrator can COS-disable message expiration (this disables all message aging on the system for all users):
Cos Disable MsgExpiration
- The LDAP administrator can modify specific entries in the LDAP database to remove the miMailExpirePolicy attribute so that specific users do not get their messages aged.
Dir Modifyldif dc=com "r"
Enter LDIF directory data, finish with a dot (.) on a line by itself:
dn: uid=user1,dc=mycompany,dc=com
changetype: modify
delete: miMailExpirePolicy
