Issue
How do you recover the appliance using a Veritas NetBackup image backup?
Solution
NOTE: Before reading this article, Mirapoint highly recommends reading the latest version of the Mirapoint Backup and Restore Guide. |
To perform system recovery with image backup:
- Install the MOS release used to backup the system.
- Configure network parameters and apply all relevent licenses.
- Configure NetBackup to monitor the recovery.
- Perform the image recovery of the full backup.
- Monitor the recovery process until completion.
- Restore, in order, all incremental backups since the full backup.
- Reboot the appliance.
Recovery of Image Backups using Veritas NetBackup
Mirapoint's image backup implementation is intended only for system recovery. Between the time of backup and recovery, the following are lost:
- Items in the mail queue
- Changes to the message store
- Any system configuration changes
While performing the recovery, the system is not usable because all services are shut down and the message store is offline. While you are logged into a Mirapoint appliance, you cannot initiate image recovery.
NOTE: Image restore works only if you are restoring to exactly the same MOS release on which the backup was done. |
To perform the recovery:
2. Configure network parameters and apply all pre-existing licenses using the keys on your license sheet.
VERBOSE = verbosity-level
In the directory /usr/openv/netbackup/logs, create a directory named ndmp with the following command on the machine running NetBackup. The messages that the image recovery sends to NetBackup appear in logs inside this directory.
mkdir /usr/openv/netbackup/logs/ndmp
Tell NetBackup that the tape device is available.
Whenever you reboot the Mirapoint appliance, NetBackup loses its connection to the NDMP service on that Mirapoint appliance. When this occurs, NetBackup marks the tape device on your Mirapoint appliance as DOWN. This makes the device unavailable and the restore impossible.
You must put the tape device on your Mirapoint appliance back into the UP state. One way to do this is with the following command:
vmoprcmd -upbyname device-name
5. Monitor the recovery.
You can watch both the recovery progress log written by NetBackup, and the messages from Mirapoint's NDMP service written to a file in the directory /usr/openv/netbackup/logs/ndmp on the NetBackup server.
When the full image recovery is complete, the log in /usr/openv/netbackup/logs/ndmp shows a message from Mirapoint's NDMP service indicating that you should reboot the Mirapoint appliance.
Do not reboot the appliance yet; you must first restore any incremental backups taken since the last full backup.
NOTE: NetBackup might report that the restore was complete in the progress log before the message indicating that you should reboot your appliance appears in NetBackup's NDMP log. Do not restore the incremental backups until the reboot message appears in the NDMP log. If you do, the recovery might not be successful. |
6. Restore in the order they were created, the incremental backups that were made since the last full backup.
Do not reboot the appliance until the final incremental backup is complete, and the reboot message appears in the NDMP log.
7. Reboot the Mirapoint appliance.
After reboot, this message displays on the Mirapoint appliance's front panel:
This indicates that the final steps of the image restore are being performed.
When the front panel indicates that the appliance is ready, the image recovery is complete.
