Issue
How do I modify my Veritas NetBackup version 5.1 configuration to work with my Mirapoint appliance and with NDMP selective restore from image?
Solution
NOTE: Before reading this article, Mirapoint highly recommends reading the latest version of the Mirapoint Backup and Restore Guide. |
This document describes how to modify an existing Veritas NetBackup (version 5.1) DMA and the Mirapoint appliance NDMP backup setup to allow for selective restore from image. Your Mirapoint appliance must be equipped with 3.6 or higher operating system.
Mirapoint's selective restore from image feature allows NDMP backups to be used for more than just disaster recovery of the appliance. NDMP by nature is a complete image backup of the Mirapoint appliance. By allowing selective files on a per user basis to be restored without over-writing the entire system, NDMP backups can now be used to restore small portions of the overall backup to the appliance on an as needed basis.
For more information on how to configure the NetBackup DMA to work with a Mirapoint appliance, see:

- Using Veritas NetBackup Version 4.5 or 5.1 to Perform an NDMP Selective Restore From Image
Overview of the Process
Before using selective restore, you might need to modify your basic NetBackup configuration so that it produces a history file each time you perform a backup. You should also set the DMA type in the Mirapoint software.
Prior to Release 3.6, Mirapoint required the history setting to be no (n). As of 3.6, the file directive settings must be modified to include the following:
- The history directive set to yes (y) or directory node (d)
- The type directive set to image
- The directory structure set to /usr/store
The following sections detail how to verify settings exist and how to change them, or if they do not exist, how to add them.
Setting the DMA Type in the Mirapoint Software
As of Release 3.6, you can add the specific NDMP DMA you are using to the Mirapoint system configuration. Changing your DMA setting allows the Mirapoint NDMP service to adjust itself to the requirements of each approved DMA. While changing from the default setting is not required for Veritas, it is recommended.
To set the NDMP DMA, do the following:
2. Type the following CLI command:
Modifying Your NetBackup DMA Setup
The following steps are completed on your NetBackup server.
1. Start the Administration Console from the command-line by entering the following command:
2. The login screen displays. Login as an administrator with full access, or as root.
The Main Menu window displays.

3. Select Policies from the main menu. The Policies screen displays.
Modifying Your Policy File Settings
Do the following:
3. Select the Backup Selections tab.
The following directives should be displayed:
If no directives are displayed on the list, follow the instructions in "Adding Directives to the Policy File Settings" in this article.
If only the /usr/store entry is on the list, follow the instructions in "Inserting Directives in Existing Policy File Settings" in this article.
If any of the specified directives or pathname appear on the list, but have values other than those specified, follow the instructions in "Changing a Directive or Pathname" in this article.
Adding Directives to the Policy File Settings
All directives for a given pathname must appear before that pathname on the list if they are to be correctly applied. Therefore, the set HIST= and TYPE= directives must appear on the list before the /usr/store pathname. The set HIST= directive must proceed the set TYPE= directive.
To add directives or the pathname, do the following:
Figure 4 Add Files Pop-Up Window
The Add Backup Selection pop-up window closes, and the Change Policy Backup Selections tab should now displays the policy directives in the correct order (see Figure 5 below).

Inserting Directives in Existing Policy File Settings
If your policy file settings includes the TYPE= directive and the /usr/store pathname, but not the HIST= directive, you must add it to the list.
Remember, All directives for a given pathname must appear before that pathname on the list if they are to be correctly applied. Therefore, the set HIST= and TYPE= directives must appear on the list before the /usr/store pathname.
From the Change Policy Directory Selections tab, do the following:

4. Click Add.

The pop-up window closes.
