What information is and is not backed up?

NOTE: Before reading this article, Mirapoint highly recommends reading the latest version of the Mirapoint Backup and Restore Guide. This manual can be accessed from the article section of this support portal.

The information that is backed up depends on the backup method and software release version. Backups are either message-based or image-based. Remote Server Replication (RSR) operates based on image-based backup but copies additional information beyond traditional NDMP backup.

Mirapoint supports three backup solutions:

  • Mirapoint Administration Protocol, using the Backup and Restore commands
  • NDMP, using: Veritas NetBackup, Legato NetWorker, Tivoli Storage Manager, or BakBone NetVault
  • On 7-Series Message Servers only - there is an option for a local disk backup

On the 7-series hardware - If the local backup option is used, the exact same information is backed up to the local disk, as when an NDMP image based backup is used. At the present time, Selective Mailbox Restore is not available using the local disk backup option.

Remote Server Replication (RSR) is a disaster recovery solution, but the information it copies is detailed here due to its basis on image-based backup.

The following message data is copied:

  • Containing domain
  • Containing folder
  • IMAP UID
  • MD5 checksum (if available)
  • Message header, body, total size
  • POP UID (if uidmigrate is enabled)
  • Received date
  • System, user-defined flags (except for Recent)
  • User (owner)

The following configuration information saved in the system file is backed up, either by domain or top level only (based on MOS 3.8.5):

 

NOTE: For RSR, system configuration data containing IP addresses, though copied to the Replica, does not apply to the Replica unless the IP addresses on the Replica are modified to those of the Master prior to the switchover. These data can include (but are not limited to): LDAP ADD, SMTP SET LMR, SMTP SET OMR, SNMP SET SYSLOCATION, SNMP ADD, NDMP Preferredip, SSL SETCERT, NETIF ADDROUT.
