Antispam is a multi-layered technology that blocks all possible types of spam. You can find all layers of antispam protection applied by IceWarp in Remote Console > Anti-Spam node.
In this article, we will explain how to tune antispam on your server to reach the highest level of protection.
Every antispam layer evaluates emails according to the conditions set in it. New mail is thoroughly checked by the antispam layers. Each layer assigns its spam score at the end of the check. The total value of the spam scores determines whether the message is marked as spam. You can adjust the threshold value of the spam score to define a message as spam in Remote Console > Anti-Spam > Action.
Action
In Action, you can adjust the threshold value for spam score, as well as manage the actions for incoming and outgoing spam messages. To adjust the threshold value, check the Score required to classify a message as spam and enter the value. The smaller the value is, the more strict the antispam protection will be. If the spam score of the message exceeds the threshold value, a predefined action will be applied to it. Depending on the value, you can refuse and delete incoming/outgoing messages or even block the sender of a spam message.
- If you check the checkboxes for Score required to refuse incoming/outgoing messages, the actions for refused messages will be enabled
. You can select whether to reject or delete the messages.
- To add Spam to the subject of an email, check Add text to the Subject of a spam message
.

General
From the sender's side, it is important to set conditions for outgoing messages. If the conditions are too strict, the outgoing message can be rejected or deleted. To set the processing of outgoing emails, go to Remote Console > General > Other.
- If you need the most thorough check of the messages that leave your server, check Process with full Anti-Spam. The outgoing messages are evaluated by all antispam layers. If a message reaches the threshold value of spam score, it will not leave the IceWarp server. Instead, the action defined in Action
will be applied.
- If you have a third-party antispam gateway, you can use it to process the outgoing and incoming messages. In this case we recommend checking Do not process with Anti-Spam and use the gateway instead.

SpamAssassin
In SpamAssassin, you can use various of complex rules to check the message. It is possible to enable the main rules directly in Remote Console > SpamAssassin. However, to find an expanded list of settings, click Configuration File. You can change the values in the file to make the spam rules more strict.

Real-time Blackhole Lists
In the RBL tab, you can select what list of untrusted IP addresses will be used as a reference for checking messages. RBL is a list of IP addresses that were used for spamming.

Antispam Logs
To increase the quality of the antispam protection, it has to be constantly adjusted according to the user's complaints and the content of incoming messages. If you receive too many unwanted emails, reduce the threshold value of the spam score.
If a trusted message was rejected as spam, check antispam logs to know the reason behind the action.
To find the logs, go to Remote Console > Status > Logs and select Anti-Spam. To see which layer assigned what score, set the logs to Extended.
